The doctoral examination procedure

On this page you will find all the steps that are part of the doctoral examination procedure:

  1. Submission of doctoral thesis & application for admission
Once you have completed your dissertation, finished the structured training programme and graduated with an exam, you submit the so-called application for admission to doctoral studies online (Antrag auf Zulassung zur Promotion) .  This means that the official examination procedure can now begin.

  2. Assessment
The dean appoints two reviewers to review your work. The reviewers have six weeks to submit their evaluations to the Dean's Office.

  3. Disputation
Once the written grade has been determined, arrange an appointment for your oral examination (disputation) with the relevant contact person from the office for doctorate matters (Promotionsbüro).

  4. Print authorisation
After having passed the oral examination, you will receive the printing permit for your dissertation from the office for doctorate matters (Promotionsbüro). With this certificate, you then contact the University and State Library Düsseldorf.
