Disputations - procedure and dates

Your dissertation has been reviewed and you can now make an appointment with your examiners for the oral examination (your disputation).  Depending on the doctoral regulations, the composition of the examination committee and the procedure of the examination may differ slightly.

The disputations usually take place as public face-to-face examinations.

In justified cases of hardship, it is possible to organise your disputation as an online video examination. Please contact disputation.promotion@med.uni-duesseldorf.de for this purpose.

Please only use our booking system to book appointments!

For the preparation of the disputations we need a lead time of about three weeks. For this purpose, the final copy of the dissertation, which has been accepted by both reviewers and the doctoral committee, must be available at the Graduate Center as a pdf document three weeks before the respective examination date. If the deadline is not met, the reserved and confirmed examination date may have to be cancelled at short notice.

Exams will be held from 4 p.m. c.t. to 6 p.m. c.t.

  • in the event room "Forum of Exchange" (Forum des Austauschs) in the O.A.S.E. or
  • in a seminar room in building 17.11

The individual disputations usually last about half an hour. If several disputations take place on one day, both the doctoral candidates and the two reviewers will receive the exact time approximately two weeks before the examination date with the official invitation.

  • Usually, four disputations take place on one date.
(Currently, the number of disputations per appointment is limited to three).
  • The examination board is composed of: First examiner, second examiner, a member of the doctoral committee and another member of the medical faculty.

  • Procedure of the oral examination:
    • Lecture and discussion usually take place in public.
(At present, it is necessary to refrain from conducting the examinations in public.)
    • The subject of the disputation is the dissertation and the entire subject area as well as the most important fundamentals of neighboring subject areas.
    • The evaluation of the oral examination takes place directly afterwards in a non-public session. The candidate will then be informed of the result.
    • The duration of the presentation is about 10 min. The discussion time is unlimited.

  • Lecture as Powerpoint presentation (Windows 7 Professional and Powerpoint Professional Plus 2010 available). The hardware (laptop, beamer and wireless mouse with pointer) will be provided by the faculty. We ask for your understanding that, in order not to disturb the course of the exams, you cannot bring your own laptop.
  • The presentation will be sent by you via e-mail to disputation.promotion@med.uni-duesseldorf.de at least one day before the exam. To be on the safe side, please bring a copy of the file on a USB stick to the exam.

After passing the oral examination, you will receive the printing approval from the doctoral office. You will be informed about the content of the "Second Page" ("Printed as Inaugural Dissertation...") as well as the further procedure for the publication of your dissertation in the ULB (keyword "Printing approval") and the issue of the doctoral certificate.
