Recognition of university degrees - Doctoral degree at Faculty of Medicine at HHU
We appreciate your interest in pursuing a doctoral degree with our faculty.
All degrees are checked for compliance with the admission requirements according to our Doctoral Regulations before applying for our doctoral programmes. We would like to point out that there are differences in the requirements for applicants with EU degrees compared to applicants with non-EU degrees.
In general, you will have to file a request for recognition of your university degree, if you hold one of the following degrees:
- a German degree of a subject not offered at HHU.
- a degree of a subject which is not equivalent to the subject of the doctoral project.
- a degree from outside of Germany.
For degrees from non-EU countries, a positive evaluation by the Central Office for Foreign Education in Bonn (ZAB) must be submitted.
For university degrees from the EU, a printout from the anabin database confirming equivalence is usually sufficient for registration.
Once you have received confirmation of your degree equivalency, you may apply for admission to our doctoral programmes.

If you have a degree from an EU country, please check independently in the "anabin" database whether your degree meets the requirements of our Doctoral Regulations. There you will find all the necessary information and can check the equivalence of your degree online.
Please check both your Bachelor's and Master's degree for equivalence. Please submit a printout that clearly shows the equivalence of the degrees. In addition, please also submit the information contained in anabin regarding the respective university.

Applicants with degrees from countries outside the EU must apply for an equivalence check of their degree (Statement of Comparability) at the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB) before submitting their application to our faculty. Please note that the processing time at the ZAB can vary and may take some time. Therefore, we recommend that you plan this step early in your application process.
The exact procedure for applying to the ZAB for a comparability check can be found on their website. There you can download the necessary forms and follow the steps to submit your application. Please submit an application for credential evaluation with the goal of "admission to doctoral studies (medicine), also Dr. rer. med.".

Applicants from VR China, Vietnam, Mongolia
Please submit a valid APS certificate from the German Embassy and show the original certificate to the office of the Graduate Center Medicine.
